Michael Barker is an independent software consultant who spends the vast majority of his time working on Aeron, which a platform for high performance messaging, persistence and clustered applications. Prior to his work on Aeron, he spent over 10 years working at LMAX implementing many elements of their broker, exchange and reliable messaging infrastructure.

In this talk Michael Barker will draw on his 15+ years of experience of building financial exchanges and high performance messaging tools to talk about the design and implementation of these technically challenging applications and how these techniques and out of the box thinking can be applied to build faster and more reliable applications. It will be a whistle stop tour through topics include distributed consensus, replicated state machines, virtual synchrony and low latency messaging, while showing that Java remains a key technology within this challenging domain.
